Dialogic reading is an evidence-based method that supports adult-child interaction and children’s active participation during shared reading. Drawing from empirical research spanning diverse linguistic and cultural contexts, this chapter delves into the efficacy of dialogic reading implemented within the home environment in fostering children’s language development. Specifically, it reviews empirical studies which examined the impact of dialogic reading on children’s first language skills and reading affect, and extends its scope to encompass the impact on second language proficiency. It further explores the adaptation and application of dialogic reading for children with special educational needs, and how digital technology is utilized to optimize the advantages of dialogic reading in facilitating children’s language acquisition. This book chapter discusses the limitations of the extant research and highlights the importance of thoroughly evaluating the conditions in which dialogic reading exhibits its utmost effectiveness across diverse linguistic and cultural contexts.
