In a literate society, young children are interested in the written language even before they learn to read and write in school. Writing is a challenging task that involves turning words into symbols, and young children need help from more experienced others to support their early writing attempts. This chapter presents a series of studies describing the nature of writing support within the family context and its significance for young children’s early literacy development. The studies examine how adults in the family help children understand the writing system while referring to the identity of the adult (father, mother, older sibling, and grandparent), different writing tools (pencil, computer keyboard, and cellphone keyboard), and the writing system (Hebrew, Spanish, English, and Russian) as significant for the nature of the writing support. The studies shed light on the benefits of adequate early writing support and encourage initiatives for organized writing support guidance.

摘要
