Enhancing Onscreen Picture Books for 2- to 6-Year-Olds: Insights from Multimedia Learning Theory
摘要
When it comes to reading books, young children need assistance not only with having the text read aloud but also with engaging with and following the storyline. However, not all parents are able or willing to engage their children in stories from an early age. In this chapter, the potential role of technology as a tool to mitigate the negative impact caused by the lack of parental support is explored. Digital books can be enhanced not only with voice-over narration but also with features that mimic the support provided by adults, including assistance in engaging with the storyline. Multimedia learning theory can be helpful in this regard. This theory focuses on designing instructional messages that incorporate multiple media, based on an understanding of how the human mind processes information. This chapter examines, according to this theory, the common challenges that young children may encounter when processing a picture book and explores ways to reduce their negative impact. These challenges involve filtering out unnecessary information, identifying all the essential elements in both words and pictures needed to mentally represent the storyline, and integrating these elements to fully comprehend the narrative.
