Congratulations! Your first position out of residency was maybe not the right fit for you, and now you have realized it, accepted it, and decided to do something about it. You now have the experience to know what type of practice setting you prefer and how you want to balance your time between clinical, teaching, research, and personal obligations. Be prepared to dedicate 6–9 months to finding the right position for you and to the process of applying, interviewing, negotiating, and credentialing. There will also be a lot of logistics to consider during your transition: what to do with your accounts and health insurance, maintenance and transfer of important records, attending orientation sessions, potentially performing proctored cases, etc. It is normal to feel some guilt when you have decided it is time to leave your first position, but you need a career that is sustainable in order for you to appropriately take care of yourself and your patients. You are doing a great service to all the patients you will care for in the future by finding a position more in line with your professional aspirations and personal values.
