For obstetrics and gynecology, board certification is a two-step process including the qualifying exam followed by the certifying exam, or more commonly referred to as the written and oral exams, respectively. The qualifying exam is a multiple-choice assessment of your knowledge in obstetrics and gynecology, as well as the subspecialties of maternal fetal medicine, urogynecology, gynecologic oncology, and reproductive endocrinology. This takes place in July after completion of residency. Once you have passed the qualifying exam, you are then eligible to take the certifying exam, which takes place in person, at ABOG headquarters. It consists of three parts: obstetrics, gynecology, and office practice. Each part lasts 1 hour each, with 30 minutes dedicated to structured cases and 30 minutes dedicated to your case list. The case list is a compilation of all patients primarily cared for by the candidate where the candidate holds privileges between July 1st and June 30th of the same academic year. While both exams evaluate your clinical knowledge, the certifying exam in particular requires unique preparation of test-taking strategies. As with all things in medicine, preparation is key.
