In Chap. 2 , I discussed some pillars of Junayd’s relationships with his masters and contemporaries, and the way he interacted or believed to have interacted with the inquisition of the Sufis. In Chap. 3 , I examined the broader context within which the Sufi community during third/ninth-century Abbasid Baghdad developed. The current chapter elaborates on Junayd’s network of relationships within and outside the Sufi community. Junayd was a leading master who strove to create a shared pious identity and a common ethical basis that united his contemporary Sufis regardless of their individual needs. This characteristic lies at the basis of the way he chose to conduct and maintain his relationships.

摘要
