This chapter provides a short account of Junayd’s life, character, his masters and associates in Baghdad and the role of his maternal uncle al-Sarī al-Saqaṭī (d. 253/867) in his life. It also examines the creation of Junayd’s image in the biographies and historiographies from the fourth/tenth centuries until the pre-modern era with an emphasis on iconic perspectives of Junayd’s character.
