The subject of this research is a set of polychromes recently discovered in the interiors of the Wieliczka Saltworks Castle, which was the administrative centre for the Royal Salt Enterprise from the Middle Ages to the 20th century and has been recognised as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The extensive and varied assemblage of wall paintings includes decorations in many layers, tentatively dated from the 16th to the 19th century. Its exceptional importance is evidenced by the presence of the representative coat of arms of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and the Vasa dynasty, as well as the preservation of such a large, multi-phase monumental painting in a secular object in Poland.
