A Study on the Factors Influencing the Intention to Accept Usage-Based Insurance
摘要
Although the number of automobile accidents in our country has recently been decreasing, it still has a high accident rate among OECD countries. Since human factors account for the majority of causes of accidents, it is urgent to improve awareness of driving habits. The auto insurance industry is also expected to suffer a deficit in the long term due to its high loss ratio. Advances in ICT such as big data and IoT have made it possible to immediately analyze drivers’ driving habits, which were previously difficult to measure. As a result, Usage-Based Insurance was launched, which can provide benefits on insurance premiums based on individual driving habits. This has the advantage of providing insurance premium discounts and encouraging proper driving habits from the driver’s perspective, and insurance companies can improve their loss ratio by imposing differentiated insurance premiums based on driving habits. Socially, it can reduce accidents, environmental pollution and traffic congestion. Overseas, driving habit data is mainly collected and analyzed based on OBD (On Board Diagnostics). In Korea, a UBI based on Mobile App has been launched. The concept and use of UBI in Korea are still in their initial stages, and there has not been much research on UBI. In this study, we conducted an empirical study on Mobile App-based UBI and OBD-based UBI to examine the influence of factors in terms of benefits, risks, and costs on the intention to use UBI. Research shows that consumers view UBI positively because of the discounted premiums and positive social image. However, they view it negatively because of the technical risks of UBI and the inappropriate use of personal data collected by UBI. Additionally, comparative studies of mobile-centric UBI and OBD-centric UBI can be used to establish differentiated strategies depending on the data collection device.
