Waste management is a key issue for various local authorities in Ghana, with the most common disposal method being landfilling. Sustainable waste management requires reliable data that could assist in the management process. To establish these data, waste types and generation rates, composition, separation efficiency of household waste, and calorific value of waste, were studied in Asokore Mampong Municipality over four weeks. The study population consisted of residents in the households of the selected study areas. Sample sizes of 100 households were selected purposively from three (3) residential areas in the Municipality including Sawaba (low-income area), Asokore Mampong (middle-income area), and Bouban (high-income area). Field observations, mini-questionnaire interviews, key informant interviews and secondary data were used to gather neighbourhood data. The calorific value of solid waste samples were determined using the Oxygen Bomb Calorimeter (Parr 6400). The results show a total of 5343.240 kg of waste sampled from the three socioeconomic areas with an average generation rate estimated to be 0.470 kg/capita/day and an average household size of 4.5 persons. The composition of the residential solid waste was dominantly organics 68%, plastic 15.4%, paper and cardboard 6.3%, metals 5%, glass 0.8%, textiles 2.0% and 2.5% “Others’’. The highest source-separated component was plastics and cardboard (94%) followed by organic (92%) and the least, the “Others” component (86%). The mean calorific value of the major components of the waste: organic, plastic, textile, paper and cardboard were found to be 19.72 MJ/kg. The cumulative calorific values of combustible contents of residential waste in the municipality was determined as 7.5 GWh per day in the study which is potentially good for waste-to-energy recovery through incineration.
