It is considered the king of fruits due to its chemical makeup, which places it fifth in terms of total production and the second most marketed tropical fruit worldwide (FAOSTAT (2023) Crops and Livestock Products). In 2022, there were over 59 million mangoes produced worldwide. India was the top mango grower, producing about 23 million tonnes year, followed by Indonesia, China, Pakistan, Mexico, and Brazil. With an annual percentage of over 38% of the world's mango exports, Mexico is the leading exporter of mangoes (FAOSTAT (2023) Crops and Livestock Products). The mango production in Pakistan has been fluctuating for the past few years but in the year 2022–23, mango production was around 2.70 million tons. In this rate, Punjab contributed around 78% of the produced fruit while the area percentage of Punjab was around 62% (PBS 2023) (Gallup Pakistan Analysis of MNFS&R and PBS data).
