Ecology of Ceratocystis Induced Infections with an Emphasis on MSDS

Mango Sudden Death Syndrome (MSDS) is one of the most devastating disease brought on by Ceratocystis fimbriata. A vast variety of plant species, mostly woody and agricultural ones, are host to C. fimbriata. It is known that 74 species belonging to 55 genera and 35 plant families are infected by C. fimbriata. The pathogen enters the tree by wounds from insect feeding, storm damage, or pruning. It avoids the tree’s natural defense mechanism as a result. C. fimbriata. Because the pathogen obstructs the tree’s vascular tissues and interferes with water transport, it is extremely aggressive and causes the tree to wilt, dieback, and eventually die. The ecology and management of C. fimbriata are complicated since it can infect crops other than mangos. Therefore, management necessitates a thorough understanding of the pathogen’s ecology, including spore dispersion processes, environmental conditions, and the part insect vectors play in the infection process. The three factors have the potential to lessen the impact and spread of MSDS, improving mango production outcomes.
