Despite an expansion in mango production area, various biotic and abiotic factors hinder the crop’s full potential. Notable challenges include quarantine issues such as fruit fly infestations and diseases like anthracnose and Mango Sudden Death Syndrome (MSDS). MSDS remains a major concern, exacerbated by inadequate watering and root damage, with key pathogens including Ceratocystis fimbriata and Lasiodiplodia theobromae. Effective disease prevention strategies, alongside improved nursery operations and orchard management, are essential for addressing these issues. The recent emergence of MSDS due to contaminated nursery potting mixes underscores the need for stringent sterilisation and pasteurisation protocols in nursery production. By focusing on enhanced disease control and adopting modern production techniques, Pakistan has the potential to increase mango yields to the crop’s natural productivity of 25 tonnes per hectare, thus strengthening its position in the global mango market.
