Climate-Smart Postharvest Management and Value Addition of Mangoes
摘要
Climate-smart postharvest management and value addition are essential to address the challenges posed by climate change to mango production. Shifting weather patterns, such as rising temperatures and unpredictable rainfall, influence mango ripening rates, shelf life, and market quality. This chapter emphasizes innovative approaches to postharvest handling, including the use of controlled atmosphere storage, optimized cooling systems, and packaging solutions that reduce spoilage and maintain fruit quality. Techniques such as hydro-cooling and the use of edible coatings derived from natural substances are explored for their effectiveness in prolonging freshness and minimizing chemical use. Value addition through mango processing into products like dried slices, purees, and beverages is highlighted as a means to enhance economic returns and reduce postharvest losses. Renewable energy technologies, such as solar drying and energy-efficient cold chains, are also discussed as sustainable solutions for rural and urban stakeholders. The adoption of digital tools, including IoT-based monitoring systems and AI-driven supply chain management, is underscored for improving efficiency and reducing waste. By implementing climate-smart strategies, mango growers and postharvest handlers can ensure that the fruit retains its quality, flavor, and nutritional value while maximizing profitability and contributing to sustainable agricultural practices.
