The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) is the world’s most ratified human rights instrument. This shows an international consensus that children have rights that States should guarantee and protect. This chapter investigates how the Latin American region has considered the protection of environmentally internally displaced children (EIDC) by analysing international and regional documents on children and mobility issues. While there is important progress in the protection of migrant children in Latin America, environmental reasons for internal displacement have received almost no attention in these documents. At the same time, the issue of internally displaced children continues to be understood as a national theme. Hence, these environmentally internally displaced children in Latin America lack protection considering the cause of their displacement (environmental or climate reasons) and their protection categories (IDPs). Some new guiding principles focused on climate-displaced children excluded other EIDCs that are not displaced due to climate-related situations.
