“Mud Feet”: Displacement and Prejudice After Environmental Disaster in Brazil
摘要
The rupture of the Fundão dam (Mariana/Minas Gerais) occurred in 2015 and most IDPs still wish to return home. Currently, these IDPs face prejudice, discrimination, and mistrust in Mariana, since their children are called “mud feet”; at school, as if they were the cause of the tragedy that hit the municipality. In 2019, the Feijão dam (Brumadinho/Minas Gerais) ruptured, killing 197 people, while 111 people went missing. Hence, these IDPs suffer the effects of the crisis that triggered their displacement before, during, and after displacement. This chapter will present specific vulnerabilities and special protection needs for IDPs from human-made threats, for instance Dams, in Brazil, as well as a look at the new legislative perspective that has been emerging in Brazil.
