AI and Language Interpreting
摘要
The impact of widely accessible large language models on language interpreting has been limited for now. However, it has revolutionised not only data-based content generation but also text translation. It is therefore likely only a matter of time before a speech-to-speech translation features are added to the AI toolkit. This raises urgent questions for interpretation users and language professionals regarding the use and utility of language skills, interpreting skills, and the essence of human connection and communication. This chapter outlines the opportunities as well as the ethical challenges and caveats that arise with the digital transformation of the language services industry. It proposes framing ethics as the basis for innovation to allow harnessing the advantages of AI solutions without falling prey to the dangers of rendering multilingual communication dysfunctional.
