E-tourism and Museums: Challenges of Resilient Local Development in Aegean Islands
摘要
E-tourism, encompassing digital tools and platforms that enhance the travel experience, has revolutionized the tourism sector, providing to the museums innovative ways to reach and engage with international audiences. Aegean Islands are characterized by their great diversity of the landscape with several contrasts and their rich cultural heritage. In this context, e-tourism presents a challenge of resilient local development. The adoption of digital technologies in museums, such as social media, virtual reality, augmented reality, Internet of Things, cloud storage, contributes to social development, enhances cultural communication, and provides a competitive advantage. In addition, seasonality in tourism in these islands is posing further complications, requiring strategies to balance peak and off-peak periods. This paper studies the intersection of e-tourism and museums in the Aegean islands, focusing on the challenges and opportunities of local development. Findings reveal that while e-tourism can significantly contribute to resilient local development, sustainable benefits should be ensured. Furthermore, it is highlighted that effective marketing strategies and active community involvement are essential components for a successful local economic development.
