How Microplastics Affect Our Bodies
摘要
Microplastics, often invisible to the naked eye, are a growing environmental and health concern. These tiny plastic particles, smaller than 5 mm, are not just a problem for aquatic ecosystems but also for human health. Alarmingly, they are entering our bodies through food, water, air, and even common items like beer and sea salt. Recent research revealed their presence in critical organs, including the liver, kidneys, spleen, heart, placenta, and even breast milk, posing potential risks to vital functions like immunity, reproduction, and overall cellular health. This chapter uncovers the alarming extent of microplastic infiltration in our bodies, the mechanisms through which they interact with and disrupt biological systems, and the pressing need for action to mitigate their impact on our health and environment.
