Crimmigration, the adaptation of criminal proceedings, criminal detention rules, criminalizing norms, and criminal institutions to enforce the detention and removal of immigrants, is today a fait accompli. The removal of immigrants in the United States mimics criminal proceedings but for the absence of criminal procedures, judges, court-appointed lawyers, and a jury of peers. The form and content of the detention process replicate lessons learned from a vast criminal system designed at the state and county levels to process close to three million felony cases every year.
