This contribution provides the first comprehensive overview to date of extant European publications in print concerning the comets of 1618. It presents various forms of media, discusses the potential and limitations of their analysis, and reflects on the extent to which adjustments to form and audience (which differed from one form to the next) affected the content and ultimately the contemporary discourse on the topic. The focus is placed on stand-alone publications, that is, broadsheets and books. Also included are periodical sources, which have so far been less extensively explored, such as almanacs and newspapers, and their potential for further analysis.

摘要

This contribution provides the first comprehensive overview to date of extant European publications in print concerning the comets of 1618. It presents various forms of media, discusses the potential and limitations of their analysis, and reflects on the extent to which adjustments to form and audience (which differed from one form to the next) affected the content and ultimately the contemporary discourse on the topic. The focus is placed on stand-alone publications, that is, broadsheets and books. Also included are periodical sources, which have so far been less extensively explored, such as almanacs and newspapers, and their potential for further analysis.
