Despite its importance in reaching sustainable biofuel production, the social dimension of advanced biofuels has not yet been explored in literature, nor has the inclusion of social aspects in the circular economy (CE) of advanced biofuel production. Therefore, this chapter has two main purposes: (1) to review the social aspects of advanced biofuel production and (2) to provide an overview of how the social dimension of sustainability can be addressed within the CE of advanced biofuel production through a review of selected literature. Results demonstrated that literature on this topic is scarce; only 17 high-quality articles treated this topic, and they stated several social aspects that are related to advanced biofuel production, especially for biodiesel and bioethanol. Meanwhile, the main social aspects of the CE of advanced biofuel production are job creation, economic development, occupational health and safety, community participation, education in the local community, and food security. Indicators to measure and monitor the performance of advanced biofuels in every social aspect were stated, and the use of social life cycle assessment is highly suggested to assess and include the social dimension of the CE of advanced biofuels. However, developing policies is necessary to encourage this topic and foster sustainability. Further research may consider other advanced biofuels and develop frameworks for assessing and implementing them in real-world applications.

摘要
