Circular Economy Advantages Through Derivatives and Value-Added Products in Advanced Biofuel Production

The demand for natural resources has outpaced the capacity for renovation, motivating the search for alternative resources. Providing such resources is essential as terrestrial ecosystems struggle with increased consumption and waste. In this sense, the transition to a circular economy based on a linear economic model is crucial to combat this imbalance between consumption and waste that can lead to the depletion of fossil fuels, climate change, pollution and energy security risks. Regarding fuels, the biofuels sourced from renewable materials like soybeans, sugarcane and residual oils offer a sustainable alternative to fossil fuels. While renewable energy sources are vital for environmental health and reducing fossil fuel use, the production of biodiesel from food crops raises food security concerns due to land conversion and increased food prices. Utilizing residual materials in biodiesel production can promote sustainable business practices and environmental stewardship by minimizing the impacts of improper waste disposal. The circular economy involves resource management, reuse and reintegration of inputs into production cycles.
