This introductory chapter offers an outline of this book and a rationale for why it was written. It briefly details the online global sport for development and peace (SDP) conference which eventually culminated in this edited collection. The event in question showcased the theoretical and applied work of various SDP scholars situated across the world, who engaged in a condensed series of presentations and discussions of issues relevant to the field. The conference had no parallel sessions, with each contributor afforded the opportunity to see everyone else present. Feedback helped to refine the focus of the studies which became the basis of chapters in this book. The outcome is a more coherent text than it might otherwise have been. This chapter proceeds by considering the definitions of key terms, namely sport, peace and development, and the challenges connected to related frameworks. It also addresses the UN Sustainable Development Goals and considers the application of sport in relation to these global objectives. The work continues by introducing the SDP sector, before detailing the structure of this book and outlining the focus of each chapter.
