Advocacy is public support for a cause or policy. The American Medical Association has defined advocacy as “taking action to promote social, economic, educational, and political changes that ameliorate suffering and threats to human health and well-being.” The patient with migraine may need to advocate with family or friends, at work, with their doctor, insurance company, and federal policymakers. The physician may need to advocate with the patient’s family, their insurance company, their work, andpolicymakers. This chapter reviews migraine advocacy and identifies critical issues, such as stigma, as well as strategies for successful advocacy.
