This chapter offers a methodology for the analysis in subsequent chapters which is resolutely inductive and bottom-up. It also discusses the database and transcription conventions in some detail. Finally, a preliminary analysis of a small subset of data is carried out, to provide the analyst with some essential insights for the rest of the empirical investigation.
