In this introductory chapter, I examine the Discourse Analysis (DA) and Conversation Analysis (CA) literature on givenness/newness and on the notion of 'topicality'. I identify a number of methodological problems, and argue in favor of a hybrid approach which blends aspects of DA and CA. I further situate the current project as being part of the Interactional Linguistics paradigm.

摘要

In this introductory chapter, I examine the Discourse Analysis (DA) and Conversation Analysis (CA) literature on givenness/newness and on the notion of 'topicality'. I identify a number of methodological problems, and argue in favor of a hybrid approach which blends aspects of DA and CA. I further situate the current project as being part of the Interactional Linguistics paradigm.
