The German construction industry has experienced strong growth over the last decade. Nevertheless, the planning and control of construction site processes are currently still predominantly manual and based on experience. At the same time, these processes are very similar to traditional production systems, especially in terms of their complexity and the challenges of scheduling and resource planning. In this area, structured and standardized planning as well as control-based key performance indicators (KPIs) are state of the art. For this reason, this paper describes an approach to systematically transfer lean production methods to the building trade. Therefore, application-specific KPIs are methodically developed in cooperation with technical building equipment (TBE) companies by adapting KPIs from traditional production systems and evaluating their practical applicability in daily work. These KPIs are then complemented by newly designed KPIs, developed in workshop sessions with the TBE companies. This results in a total of 14 KPIs, which are mapped to a previously developed project management (PM) methodology based on lean and agile management approaches. The data-based PM methodology and the use of KPIs allow stakeholders to digitally track the status of the construction site, identify possible weak points and utilize optimization potential, which will be validated in future construction site projects.
