Factory Planning from the Inside Out Based on Logistical Weak Points

In the contemporary global market economy, manufacturers are confronted with challenges, which are further compounded by mounting pressure to differentiate their products in terms of functionality, quality, or price. From the customer’s perspective, these factors comprise logistical performance, which is offset by logistics costs from the company’s perspective. Consequently, logistics performance is becoming a pivotal competitive factor, exerting a considerable influence on customers’ purchasing decisions. This paper examines the potential of logistical models as supporting tools for identifying and eliminating deficiencies in production structures to achieve an optimal balance between logistics performance and costs. By integrating these models into the factory planning process, particularly in light of the VDI 5200 guideline, the study illustrates how synergies between production logistics and factory planning can be created. An application example is provided to demonstrate how the implementation of logistical models can result in a more logistically efficient factory design.
