Methodology for the Economic Evaluation and Identification of Technical Effects of Process Innovations in the Early Stages of Innovation: The Case of Oxygen-Free Production

In companies, investment decisions are based on economic value added (EVA), which focuses on monetary targets. Due to the increasing importance of logistics objectives, it is necessary to integrate the interdependencies between innovation-driven technical effects, logistics performance, and costs. Nevertheless, assessing economic value in the early innovation phases presents a challenge, as the concept of EVA is not readily applicable in such contexts. This paper presents an approach for developing a semi-quantitative procedure for the economically evaluating of process innovations in the early innovation phase. Exemplarily, the approach is applied to process innovations of the Collaborate Research Center (CRC) 1368 on oxygen-free production. The CRC 1368 investigates process innovations for future-oriented production techniques in an oxygen-free environment. The procedure aims to derive and assess measures to influence economic and logistics effects by identifying interdependencies between economic and the already empirically and literature-based technical effects of process innovations in oxygen-free production.
