The focus of this chapter is on the potential for AgeTech to support the care and quality-of-life of older residents of long term care (LTC) homes. Most older persons wish to remain in their own homes for as long as possible. Unfortunately, health and social care systems in many countries have not evolved to provide adequate or sufficient community-based alternatives to long term residential care. Continued lack of such alternatives reflects policy and system priorities that could be considered ageist, resulting in many older persons being admitted to a care setting they would not prefer. Long Term Care (LTC) homes provide care for aging and increasingly at risk and diverse resident populations, but face significant challenges related to funding, staffing and care quality. Potentially beneficial technologies include technologies for healthcare information and management, technology to support communication and social interaction, technology for entertainment and recreation, social robots and automated prompting systems, and sensors and wearables for remote monitoring.
