Most people do not enter a residency program to transfer, but life happens. According to the AAMC, about 30 percent of residents still need to finish the initial program they started [1]. Residents may choose to switch programs for several reasonable unforeseen circumstances, including life events, health changes, finances, career changes, or even a bad fit. Fortunately, there are opportunities to transfer programs if such a circumstance arises. This chapter will focus on the transferring/swapping process, things to consider, and resources available if you need to make a change. I will also share my personal experience with transferring radiology residencies.
