Asking for help at work takes work. That holds true for every practice stage, but new attendings may find it especially difficult to request assistance. For new attendings trying to decide when to call for help, my advice goes back to the original guiding principle in medicine, “primum non nocere” (Hippocrates), first do no harm. The weight of the words of the Hippocratic Oath never diminishes. When you encounter a case where you need assistance to ensure your patient will receive the correct diagnosis or treatment, you should ask for help, period. And with PACS chat features available at several institutions, it has never been easier than now in radiology to ask for help. New attendings should know that, at one point or another, every one of their radiology colleagues will sometimes need help with a case.
