As you sign your first case as an attending, it is normal to feel excited about beginning a new career and fear you might make a mistake that harms a patient. There are tips to help you navigate your first day and first year on the job. Become familiar with and know how to reach your colleagues and other subspecialties. Get to know your support staff as soon as possible. They will be an invaluable resource to help you acclimate and function well in your new job. On your first day, expect you will be at work late and plan accordingly. Be patient with yourself. The first day can be daunting and overwhelming. But it does get easier. Utilizing tools you set in place on day, one will allow you to face challenges as they arise and set you (and your patients) up for success.
