After getting offered a job, you likely will receive an offer letter, also known as a “letter of intent,” detailing the basics of the job. After agreeing to accept the position, you will receive a legally binding detailed document called the “Employment Agreement” or “Physician Contract.” This important document will affect your current and future employment, if you ever change jobs. It is strongly advised that you seek legal counsel from an attorney familiar with physician contracts, preferably one with experience in radiology physician contracts. Even with the best legal advice, however, you still need to have a basic knowledge of contract provisions and the significance of your legal obligations. Furthermore, being comfortable with some basic negotiating skills would be best. This chapter provides a brief—and simplified—overview of contract provisions that may be amenable to negotiation and a basic legal understanding of a physician contract.
