This chapter is for medical students/radiology residents who are considering an independent interventional radiology residency with or without early specialization (ESIR). The chapter contains a mix of “hard” information gleaned from the ACGME, ERAS, NRMP, ABR and SIR websites, and my own personal opinions and experiences from going through the postgraduate education application process and since. The similarities and differences between the integrated IR residency and the independent IR residency are emphasized throughout the chapter; it is strongly advised that Chap. 6 be read in concert with Chap. 20 . Chapters 6 and 20 are written with the same subsections, thus making comparisons between the two IR residencies easier.
