Hans Berger (1873–1941), a German psychiatrist, was the first to record electrical brain waves in humans, pioneering the field of clinical electroencephalography (EEG). The first EEG recording, obtained on July 6, 1924, was taken from a 17-year-old patient, Carl Zedel, who had undergone a palliative trepanation over the left hemisphere. In a series of 14 articles published between 1929 and 1938, Berger detailed his observations of alpha and beta rhythms, as well as EEG changes associated with various stimulations, mental states, and medical conditions, including epilepsy and dementia. Berger’s work was driven by a personal fascination with psychic phenomena and a scientific curiosity about the brain’s inner energy. While the EEG ultimately refuted the possibility of “telepathic communication” without physical means, it opened new pathways for studying and understanding brain function.
