Electroencephalography: Beyond the Waves

Electroencephalography (EEG) has evolved significantly since its origins with Richard Caton and Adolf Beck, culminating in Hans Berger’s first human EEG recording in 1924. This breakthrough marked a paradigm shift in neuroscience, leading to the development of a “new language” to describe the characteristic waveforms observed in EEG recordings. As researchers classified and named these waveforms, it became evident that they carried deeper physiological and functional significance beyond their graphical appearance. While EEG has become an invaluable tool in neuroscience, Berger’s fascination with psychophysiology remains relevant today. His vision of linking brain activity to psychic manifestations continues to inspire modern EEG research, particularly in brain connectivity and network dynamics. Although EEG and its derived techniques may not fully explain consciousness, they remain essential in the pursuit of understanding how brain processes give rise to the mind.
