Two Portuguese mathematicians and university professors, Vicente Gonçalves (1896–1985) and José Sebastião e Silva (1914–1972), wrote textbooks for undergraduates. These books became very famous for their mathematical accuracy, but also for their vast notes on the history of mathematics. The aim of this study is to identify and analyze in detail the characteristics of these historical notes and their potential for current teaching.

Two Portuguese mathematicians and university professors, Vicente Gonçalves (1896–1985) and José Sebastião e Silva (1914–1972), wrote textbooks for undergraduates.
