This article discusses various aspects of the usefulness of the history of mathematics for teaching and learning mathematics, for presenting mathematical science, and for understanding and acquiring mathematical principles and methods. Using new resources and concepts, we present some examples of practical activities that have already been tried out. Finally, we analyse new material on the transformation of mathematics in the seventeenth century, enabling the teachers to devise new and fruitful practical activities.
