The paper relates to the 18th-century debate concerning the Earth's shape. We present and explore D’Alembert’s treatment of this issue in his two encyclopedic articles, “Form of the Earth” and “Degree”. Our study delves into the philosophical and pedagogical implications of D’Alembert’s work, focusing on the analysis of the structure of his arguments and how they relate elementary notions with complex research problems and philosophical issues of his own time. We finally argue that D’Alembert's argument provides valuable insights for educators, offering a foundation to engage students in critical thinking and inquiry, one the basis of two examples, one at middle school, the other at high school level.
