Study Regarding the Possibilities of Recovering Expanded Polystyrene from Construction and Demolition Wastes, By Reintegrating it into Concrete

This paper addresses a current topic, namely the possibility of incorporating waste from construction and demolition into concrete. Recycling waste from this industry saves natural resources, saves energy, reduces the amount of solid waste, reduces air and water pollutants. This study involves identifying the main quality characteristics of concrete obtained by integrating expanded polystyrene (EPS) into their composition. Concrete with EPS was adopted in the field of construction decades ago. The purpose of integrating EPS into the concrete composition is to reduce the weight of the material used in constructions to avoid overloading the resistance structures and to benefit from the thermal/acoustic insulation properties of this material. The pearls found in the EPS structure partially replace the coarse and fine aggregates in the concrete composition. Performance, workability, and mechanical properties as well as long-term behavior were analyzed and centralized, taking into consideration the functional uses such as moisture insulation, thermal and sound insulation of the material. As a result of the growth that the construction industry had, the volume of waste generated is much higher, being considered a major problem for the environment, hence the need for better information and education of builders regarding production control, reuse as well as waste disposal. Recent studies have focused on new types of concrete with EPS recycled from the construction and demolition industry (CDW) as a partial substitute for aggregates or in combination with other recycled materials, due to current worldwide environmental concerns regarding the search viable solutions by reusing this material by introducing it into the concrete component. These challenges being very problematic, the production of this type of concrete follows a global trend, namely that of reusing construction and demolition waste as partial or total substitutes for some components of the concrete composition, these being exhaustible resources. Following this study, it was concluded that concrete with EPS content shows good workability, can be easily compacted and finished, has a lower density, thermal/acoustic insulation with good performance, very versatile due to its lighter weight low but it is not indicated to be used for the resistance structures of buildings.
