This chapter describes contemporary Russian history following its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Russia’s punitive laws and practices have intensified at an alarming rate since the invasion, leading to the closure of theater productions by creators who have spoken out against the war in Ukraine or whose works were deemed too provocative for the state’s new propaganda narratives. Our case study focuses on the creation, evolution, and radical reforms of the National Theater Festival and Award—The Golden Mask.
