This chapter examines mechanisms of censorship on the Russian stage in connection to officially supported and sanctioned homophobia. It explores the impact of state legislation aimed at protecting children and youth from pedophilia and exposure to non-traditional (i.e., non-heterosexual) practices and its effects on theater practices and the representation of LGBTQ+ communities on stage. The documentary play, Out of Closet, written by Nana Grinstein and directed by Anastasia Patlay for Teatr.doc in 2016, serves as our case study.
