This chapter describes the historical evolution of Russian censorship, emphasizing how it has been instrumentalized under two decades of Putin’s authoritarian regime. It provides a brief chronology of pre-Soviet, Soviet, and post-Soviet laws and legislation related to censorship and sets the theoretical framework for the book by focusing on two types of censorship: external censorship executed by the state and internal self-censorship.
