In this chapter, I first portray Egyptian modernism in its liberalModernism(s)liberal and authoritarianModernism(s)authoritarian variants to provide an ideational and institutional context for the Islamist transitionsIslamist transition(s) of the 1970s and 2010s. The second and third sections take up Sadat’sSadat, Anwar state IslamismIslamism(s) and the Muslim BrotherhoodEgyptAl-Ikhwān or Brotherhood’s societalEgyptsocietal Islamism Islamism, respectively, including their internal and external triggersTriggers. Where appropriate, I refer to the Turkish experience primarily and the Algerian, Moroccan, and Tunisian experiences secondarily as contrasting cases.
