In this chapter, I first examine Kemalist modernismTurkeyKemalist modernism as the political ideologyPolitical ideology or ideologies of Turkish nation-building and with a focus on its treatment of Islam. In the second section, I take up the accommodativeIslamist turn(s)accommodative or accommodationist Islamism of the military regime in the early 1980s and explain it by the Turkish–Islamic Ideology (TISTurkeyTIS), triggering events, and mediating institutional arrangements. The third section does the same for the restitutiveIslamist turn(s)restitutive Islamism of the ErdoğanErdoğan, Recep Tayyip regime in the 2010s by replacing TISTurkeyTIS with Turco-IslamismTurkeyTurco-Islamism.
