The World-Historical Context of Islamisms

Shifting the focus to country-specific manifestations of the crises of legitimizationLegitimization, governance, and development, this chapter tries to show how the triple crisis provided a generally favourable environment for the rise of IslamismIslamism(s) in Turkey, Egypt, Pakistan, Iran, and several other cases (e.g., Tunisia, Morocco, Algeria, Bangladesh, Sudan, Afghanistan). The first section takes up the legitimizationLegitimization crisis associated with national secular arrangements. The next two sections engage in a similar exercise concerning the governance and development crises as rooted in specific authoritarian polities and developmentalist policies, respectively.
