This chapter has three sections corresponding to, and elaborating on, the descriptive, explanatory, and sampling aspects of the research. The first section constructs the dependent variable by offering a typology of Islamist turns. This was followed by a discussion, in the second section, of the political ideologyPolitical ideology or ideologies perspective in dialogue with neo-institutionalist perspectives to explain the cross-national variation. The third section deals with methodological issues in selecting and comparing the four country cases.
