As stated by Mahatma Gandhi, India lies in villages. Hence, the development of rural societies is of utmost importance as it forms the bedrock of the country. Rural societies have their own social and economic problems. Growing population, lack of employment opportunities, underdeveloped health, transportation infrastructure, and declining water resources are to name a few. To address the majority of these issues, the Government of India implemented the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA). Its mandate is to provide 100 days of guaranteed employment to the unskilled people of rural areas. The present study tries to examine the impact of MGNREGA at a minute scale so that problems, strengths, and changes can be understood at the root level. Also, the study attempts to understand how the scheme is further enhancing the solidarity of people belonging to different religious and cultural backgrounds as they work in harmony under the MGNREGA scheme. Riyali panchayat comes under the Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh. Being a part of the Himalayan state, this panchayat has its potential and problems. It has been found during the study that people from three religions Hindu, Sikh, and Muslim live in this panchayat. Though the education level is very low and employment opportunities are limited, MGNREGA has positively impacted this panchayat not only through infrastructure development and employment generation but also by strengthening the solidarity among the people. These people under the scheme have constructed roads, and kuhls on their own. No influence of people from outside states was noticed. People themselves prefer doing their work. Most of them were engaged in agricultural activities. The position of women is also changing after working in MGNREGA. Though there is still room for development, the positive changes cannot be overlooked.

Though there is still room for development, the positive changes cannot be overlooked.
